Seven make it prescription-only, including Poland 3 and South Korea 4, and Switzerland bars pharmacies from selling it 5. The sale status is unconfirmed in 6 countries, and 9 publish no official information on it at all.

Where can you buy potassium iodide without a prescription?

In the United States, the FDA says "KI is available without a prescription" 1. In Germany, the federal environment ministry says people who want their own stock can buy tablets without a prescription in a pharmacy, and that some online pharmacies sell them 32. Denmark 23, Norway 58, Finland 27, the Netherlands 57 and Sweden 82 describe them as over-the-counter or non-prescription medicines. In Lithuania, anyone outside the free e-prescription zone can buy them at their own expense without a prescription 48.

A legal category is not the same as a product on the shelf. Ireland's authorised 65 mg product is listed as "not marketed" 42. The only thyroid-blocking product found in Australia's register is non-prescription, but its retail availability is not established 103. The UK protocol gives 65 mg tablets the "pharmacy only" category, but retail stocking was not verified 88. Canada's tablets are licensed as non-prescription natural health products 94, with no official source on which pharmacies stock them 93. South Africa's tablets are potassium iodate rather than iodide, sold by a pharmacist and recorded in a prescription book 124.

New Zealand 113114 and India 105106 classify the medicine as non-prescription, but no approved or marketed thyroid-blocking product was found.

Which countries require a prescription?

Seven countries list potassium iodide as prescription-only: Croatia 15, Hungary 37, Poland 3, Romania 65, Slovenia 75, South Korea 4 and the United Arab Emirates, where the Abu Dhabi drug list codes 65 mg and 130 mg tablets "POM" 129. Romania's 2022 scheme let family doctors issue a one-time prescription that listed pharmacies filled free of charge 66. Slovenia's regulation lets residents collect tablets from a pharmacy at any time on request, on presentation of a health insurance card 76. Malta has one OTC and one prescription-only product 54.

Where is it not sold at all?

Switzerland is the clearest case: pharmacies and drugstores may not sell its Kaliumiodid 65 SERB tablets, which are handed out free within 50 km of a plant 5. Taiwan lists potassium iodide as a non-prescription drug "limited to use by competent units or agencies" 118. Spain has no authorised retail product, while zone I households get it free without a prescription 7980. Serbia 68, Indonesia 108, Moldova 55 and Turkey 127 have no thyroid-blocking product in their registers, Israel's two former products were cancelled 122, and in Portugal only a 0.2 mg supplement is sold 63. Where is the status unclear?

The sale status is unconfirmed in six countries. In France, the official medicine database contradicts itself: the product summary says "Médicament non soumis à prescription médicale", while the page header carries a "sur ordonnance uniquement" tag 2930. In Japan, 50 mg pills are classed as a medical-use drug other than a prescription drug, but no official source says whether pharmacies may sell them for preparedness 110. Ukraine 86, Mexico 98, Peru 100 and Georgia 121 could not be confirmed because the registers could not be reached or read. Seven more countries are verified as silent on the point: Argentina 90, Brazil 91, Greece 36, Iceland 40, Italy 45, Luxembourg 51 and Thailand 120.

Does buying tablets change when you take them?

No. Every country that publishes a rule says to take tablets only when the authorities say so, for example Switzerland 84, Germany 34 and the United Kingdom 89. Several advise against buying in advance: Italy's civil protection tells the public not to buy tablets preventively 45, Greece's atomic energy commission sees no reason to buy them "just in case" 36, and Iceland's health authorities said in 2022 that there was no reason to buy them 40. Do I need a prescription for potassium iodide in the United States?

No. The FDA states that KI is available without a prescription 1.

Can I buy iodine tablets in a Swiss pharmacy?

No. Pharmacies and drugstores are not allowed to sell Kaliumiodid 65 SERB tablets; they hand them out free only against a commune voucher, within the 50 km distribution area 5.

Can an ordinary iodine supplement replace a thyroid-blocking tablet?

No. Denmark's health authority says iodine food supplements cannot replace them 23, and Japan's guide says iodine disinfectants, gargles or iodine-rich foods are not substitutes 111. In Portugal and Turkey, the only potassium iodide tablets listed are microgram-dose supplements, far below a blocking dose 63127.

Is potassium iodide prescription-only in Poland?

Yes. Every listed pack of the three 65 mg products in the official register has availability category Rp 35960.

If it is sold over the counter, should I keep some at home?

That depends on the country. Denmark recommends keeping tablets at home for people under 40 and for pregnant and breastfeeding women 23, and Norway gives similar advice 58, while Greece 36 and Iceland 40 say there is no reason to buy them.
