Short answer. In Poland, potassium iodide tablets are held in state strategic reserves and are not handed out in advance. If a radiation emergency is declared, municipalities give them out at local distribution points 1. Take them only when the authorities say so: the product leaflet says as soon as possible, ideally within 2 hours of the announcement, and still beneficial within 8 hours of exposure 2.
How are iodine tablets distributed in Poland?
The tablets move down a chain: from the Government Strategic Reserves Agency to voivodeship warehouses, then to State Fire Service district commands, then to municipalities 1. Each municipality sets its own distribution points 1. In Kujawsko-Pomorskie, for example, almost 500 locations were prepared in 2022 1.
In autumn 2022, as a precaution ordered by the Interior Ministry, tablets were delivered to municipalities; in Kujawsko-Pomorskie the State Fire Service did the delivery 1.

When should I take potassium iodide?
Only after an announcement by the authorities, for example on radio or TV. Do not decide on your own and do not take it preventively 12. The leaflet states: "Tabletki zawierające jod należy przyjmować jedynie w przypadku katastrof jądrowych i po komunikacie odpowiednich władz np. za pośrednictwem radia lub telewizji" (tablets containing iodine should be taken only in the event of nuclear disasters and after an announcement by the relevant authorities, for example via radio or television) 2.
On timing, the leaflet says to take them as soon as possible, ideally within 2 hours of the announcement of radioactive iodine contamination, and that they are still beneficial within 8 hours of exposure 2. A regional endocrinologist quoted by the Kujawsko-Pomorskie voivodeship said the most effective timing is 24 hours before the radioactive cloud arrives 1.

What is the dose of a 65 mg tablet?
According to the leaflet for 65 mg potassium iodide tablets 2:

Can I buy iodine tablets at a pharmacy in Poland?
Only with a prescription. Poland's official medicinal products register lists three 65 mg potassium iodide tablet products (Jodek potasu G.L. Pharma, Jodek potasu SERB and Jodek Potasu TZF), and every listed pack has the availability category "Rp" (prescription-only) 345. The official route described by the authorities is distribution from state reserves through municipalities 1.
