Short answer. In Ukraine, potassium iodide (KI) is taken only after an official order from the authorities 1. Local authorities stock it in pharmacies, kindergartens, schools and health facilities, and people living within 10 km of a nuclear power plant may receive tablets in advance 1. Official medical recommendations give one dose of 125 mg for adults up to 40 2.
When should you take iodine in Ukraine?
Only when the authorities tell you to. Iodine prophylaxis is ordered when the expected thyroid dose exceeds 50 mGy for children or 200 mGy for adults 2. Do not take tablets on your own initiative: wait for the official warning, broadcast after the "Attention everyone!" signal (see alerts).

Who receives tablets in advance?
Local authorities keep KI stocks for people in the observation zone of each nuclear power plant, defined in regional radiation-accident plans 1. The order states: "серед населення, яке проживає в радіусі до 10 км навколо АЕС, здійснюється попередній розподіл препаратів йодиду калію" — among people living within 10 km of a nuclear plant, potassium iodide is distributed in advance 1.

How is iodine handed out in an emergency?
Stocks are kept in pharmacies, kindergartens, schools, health facilities and other places chosen by local authorities 1. Emergency plans can include 1:

- delivery to homes;
- free pickup at pharmacies.
What dose do the recommendations give?
The Recommendations on iodine prophylaxis of the National Research Center for Radiation Medicine, approved by its Scientific Council on 27 January 2021, give these single doses 2:

How quickly must it be taken?
Timing matters 2:
- the best effect comes if taken up to 6 hours before exposure;
- the optimal window runs from 24 hours before to 2 hours after;
- taking it is still justified within 8 hours;
- starting later than 14 hours may do more harm than good.
Can iodine tincture or Lugol's solution replace tablets?
Only exceptionally, and given by medical staff 2.
Can you buy potassium iodide in Ukraine?
Potassium iodide 125 mg tablets are sold in Ukrainian pharmacies, but whether a prescription is needed could not be confirmed in the State Register of Medicinal Products, and pharmacy listings disagree. Whatever its sale status, take it only on official order 1.
