Potassium iodide in Mexico: who gets it near Laguna Verde?

Short answer. Mexico's only nuclear power plant, Laguna Verde in Veracruz, is covered by the External Radiological Emergency Plan (PERE), with a principal action and immediate protection zone of 16 km around the plant ¹. Veracruz health services list "radiological prophylaxis" among the PERE health tasks ², but no official public page found says who receives potassium iodide, when, or whether it is sold over the counter.

What is the PERE?

The Plan de Emergencia Radiológica Externo (PERE) is the off-site emergency plan for the Laguna Verde nuclear power plant. Its exercise is held every two years; the most recent was reported by the Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection (SSPC) in August 2026 ¹.

How large is the protection zone?

The SSPC states that "the principal action radius and the immediate protection zone considered in the PERE covered 16 kilometres around the nuclear plant" ¹. Is potassium iodide distributed to households?

Not according to any official source found. We found no official pre-distribution of potassium iodide to households near Laguna Verde. The Veracruz health services' radiological emergency programme lists, among the tasks of the PERE health task force, "medical care for irradiated or radioactively contaminated people, radiological prophylaxis" ². The page does not say what the prophylaxis consists of, who receives it or when.

To be confirmed. This point is unresolved. If you live near Laguna Verde, ask your municipal Civil Protection unit or the Veracruz health services how iodine would be provided in an emergency.

Can you buy potassium iodide in Mexico?

Not confirmed. On 21 October 2026, the public registry search of COFEPRIS, Mexico's health regulator, could not be reached, and no other official source stating a registration or sale condition for potassium iodide tablets was found. Tablets sold online are not evidence of an approved registration. We do not state either way until an official source confirms it; ask a pharmacist or doctor before taking any iodine product.
