Short answer. No. Colombia publishes no official potassium iodide (KI) guidance. No distribution programme, no planning zones and no stated sale status were found at UNGRD or the Ministry of Health. The country has no nuclear power plant.
Why is there no iodine programme in Colombia?
Colombia has no nuclear power plant, and its official preparedness material does not mention KI. UNGRD's main household booklet is an earthquake preparedness guide (see our emergency supplies page).
Can I buy potassium iodide in Colombia?
We found no official Colombian source stating whether KI is sold over the counter, on prescription or not at all, so we make no claim either way. Ask a pharmacist or a doctor before buying or taking it. Our potassium iodide guide explains what KI does and does not protect against.
Which hazards does Colombia's official guidance cover?
UNGRD's main household booklet is the Guía de preparativos ante sismo (earthquake preparedness guide, first edition, November 2024). It asks households to keep a kit with a reserve for at least 5 days and to agree on a family plan 1. The Colombian Geological Survey monitors 25 active volcanic structures with four colour-coded alert states 2, and IDEAM publishes weather, river, landslide and wildfire alerts in its free app IDEAM en tu Mano 3. Radiological emergencies do not appear in this material, which is why there is nothing official to report on iodine.
What should I do instead?
- Follow the instructions of the authorities in any emergency. Colombia's official alert channels are described on our alerts page.
- Keep a battery-powered AM-FM radio in your kit, as UNGRD's checklist asks (kit).
- Read our guides on potassium iodide, nuclear plant zones, whether to shelter or evacuate and the fallout 7-10 rule for the general principles.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an iodine distribution zone in Colombia?
No official zone or distribution was found.
Should I take iodine as a precaution?
Not without an official instruction or medical advice. Our potassium iodide guide explains when it is used.
Who would give instructions in a radiological emergency?
UNGRD coordinates the national disaster risk management system; see our emergency contacts page.
