Short answer. Of 62 governments compared, 28 build household supplies around 72 hours (3 days), such as Canada 1 and Greece 2. Thirteen ask for a week or more: Slovenia's food list covers 30 days 3, Austria's stock 14 days 4. At the short end, Argentina's grab bag holds one day of water and food 5. Eleven, including the United States 6, set no national number.
How many days does each government recommend?
The table uses each government's own wording. Water figures are per person; read the unit, because some are per day and some are totals. "Unconfirmed" marks a figure still being checked, not stated here as fact.

Countries that use 72 hours
Twenty-eight countries use three days or 72 hours as their main figure. In Europe: Belgium 11, Bulgaria 16, Cyprus 23, the Czech Republic 26, Denmark 27, Finland ("longer if possible") 30, France 32, Greece 2, Iceland 36, Lithuania 49, Moldova 56, the Netherlands 57, Poland 63, Romania 66 and Spain 74. Elsewhere: Canada 1, Chile 19, Georgia 33, Indonesia 39, Israel 41, Kazakhstan 45, Malaysia 51, New Zealand 58, the Philippines (three days of food) 62 and Turkey 83. Australia, Brazil and South Africa use it below national level.
Australia's three days come from Queensland 7, Brazil's from São Paulo state 14, and South Africa's from the City of Cape Town 71. In Spain the national template names a 72-hour kit without quantities 74; the detailed list is Catalonia's 75. Thailand's 72 hours 82 is not counted here: the page could not be read at its source and remains unconfirmed.
The 72-hour figure covers different objects. Turkey 83, Indonesia 39 and Malaysia 51 describe a bag to grab when leaving; Indonesia asks for one ready to take in 10 seconds 39. Moldova 56 and Israel 41 describe self-sufficiency at home. For contents, see What goes in a 72-hour emergency kit?.
Countries that ask for less than three days
Four governments publish shorter horizons. Argentina's official grab bag holds water and food for one day 5. Croatia's evacuation kit covers at least 2 days 22, and Kuwait asks for food and water for at least 2 days 46. Portugal's national leaflet asks for water and canned food for two or three days 64. Croatia and Argentina describe a kit to carry when leaving, not a home stock 225.
Countries that use four or five days
Three Latin American governments split the supply into stages. Peru's "Survival Combo" is a backpack for the first 24 hours plus a reserve box for days 2 to 4 60. Mexico's CENAPRED asks for a 48-hour backpack, sized for two people, plus a reserve box for two more days 54. Colombia asks for a food reserve of at least 5 days 20.
Countries that ask for a week or more
Norway asks for one week 59; Sweden 76 and Estonia 28 for at least one week. Taiwan asks for at least 7 days at home 80. Japan sets at least 3 days and recommends one week 43. Latvia asks households to cope alone for 72 hours but to stock for 3 to 7 days 48. Switzerland recommends food for about a week, with water for three days 78. The United Arab Emirates gives an example food list for two weeks and an earthquake kit with water and food for a week 85.
Five go further. Germany sets 10 days if possible 34. Austria recommends 14 days of food and drink 49. Singapore advises two weeks of essential food 69. Slovakia asks for at least 14 days in a long power outage 70; see How do you prepare for a long power outage?. Slovenia's government page gives a per-adult food list for 30 days, but asks for drinking water for at least 3 days 3. For building a longer stock, see How do you stock two weeks of supplies at home? and How long does emergency food last, and how do you rotate it?.
Countries with no national number of days
The United States asks for "several days" 6, the United Kingdom for an emergency lasting "a few days" 86 and Luxembourg for "a few days" 50. Ireland 40, Italy 42 and Serbia 68 give no number. India's national kit list has no duration; only its cyclone advice mentions essentials "to last a few days" 3738. Costa Rica sets no duration for the kit, only 72 hours of medicines for people with a medical condition 21. South Korea's figure exists only at district level 73. Hungary's figures concern a nuclear emergency, not a general stock 35; see How far do emergency zones around nuclear plants extend?. Ukraine's guidance centres on the "alarm suitcase", with district-level durations 84.
Qatar has published no household stockpile list; in March 2026 its Ministry of Interior urged the public to avoid unnecessary stockpiling 65. Malta announced an emergency manual for every household in April 2026 53, but its content has not been checked, so Malta is marked unconfirmed.
How much water per person do governments recommend?
Most daily figures given in litres fall between 2 and 4 litres per person: 2 litres in Canada's checklist 1, Chile 19, Indonesia 39 and Paraná 15; 3 litres in Cyprus 23, Georgia 33, Iceland 36, Moldova 56 and Poland 63; 4 litres in Greece 2. Higher figures usually include hygiene: 5 litres in Kuwait 46 and Cape Town 71, at least 7.5 litres in Slovenia 3. Croatia's 1.5-2 litres 22 and Catalonia's 1.5-litre minimum 75 are at the low end.
Several countries give a total instead: Luxembourg at least 6 litres 50, Kazakhstan 3-4 litres for three days 45, Switzerland at least 9 litres 78. Costa Rica's grab kit holds a half-litre bottle 21. Bulgaria 16, Mexico 55, Turkey 83 and the Philippines 62 name water without a litre figure. These figures serve different purposes and should not be mixed. See How much water to store per person per day? and How should you store emergency water, and for how long?.
Frequently asked questions
Which country recommends the longest supply?
Slovenia's food list covers 30 days per adult, though its water target is at least 3 days 3. Austria (14 days of food and drink) 49, Singapore (two weeks of food) 69 and Slovakia (at least 14 days for a blackout) 70 follow. Germany asks for 10 days if possible 34.
Is 72 hours enough?
It is the most common figure here, used by 28 of 62 countries. Several present it as a minimum: "at least" in Canada 1, "longer if possible" in Finland 30. Germany says 3 days already helps but sets 10 days as the target 34.
Why do some countries recommend less than three days?
Their figure usually describes a bag to carry when evacuating, not a home stock. Argentina's grab bag covers one day 5 and Croatia's evacuation kit at least 2 days 22. Mexico 54 and Peru 60 add a reserve box for the following days.
Which countries publish no number of days at all?
At national level: the United States 6, the United Kingdom 86, Ireland 40, Italy 42, Luxembourg 50, Serbia 68, India 37, Costa Rica 21, South Korea 72, Hungary 35 and Ukraine 84. Qatar has published no household list 65.
