Short answer. Moldova's General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) asks every household to be self-sufficient for the first 72 hours (3 days) of a crisis 1. Plan on average 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, 4 litres in hot weather, plus long-life food, a home medicine stock and a packed emergency suitcase 1.
How long should my supplies last in Moldova?
Seventy-two hours. IGSU's guide is titled Actions in the first 72 hours and asks families to prepare water and food for that period 12. The guide gives no longer target.
How much water per person?
The guide says: "Pentru o persoană pe zi este necesar în medie 3 litri de apă (4 litri pe perioada caniculară)" — on average 3 litres of water per person per day, 4 litres during heatwaves 1.
| Household | 3 days, normal weather | 3 days, hot weather |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | 9 L | 12 L |
| 2 people | 18 L | 24 L |
| 4 people | 36 L | 48 L |
The table multiplies IGSU's daily figures by three days 1. Calculate for the whole family, and find out where the nearest natural water sources are, such as wells and springs 1. Keep a water filter in the emergency suitcase 1. For storage and treatment, see water per person, water storage containers and water purification.
What food should I store?
IGSU asks for food that keeps at least 6 months, needs no cooking or refrigeration and is high in calories 1. Its examples: tinned food, vegetables, pasta, cereals, biscuits, flour, vegetable oil, cheese, coffee, tea, sugar, honey, jam and nuts 1. Do not forget a food stock for pets 1. A means of heating food belongs in the emergency suitcase 1. See food shelf life and cooking without power.
Which medicines should I keep at home?
Restock the home first-aid kit and keep painkillers and fever reducers, medicines for digestive disorders, antiallergic medicines and sedatives 1. IGSU gives no quantities. Add any prescription medicines your family takes. See the first-aid kit guide.
What else does IGSU recommend for power and heating cuts?
For utility outages, the guide also recommends 1:
- a backup power source or generator;
- a heater that works without mains electricity;
- a fuel reserve;
- containers to carry and store water;
- a notebook with important phone numbers.
Run generators and fuel heaters outdoors or with proper ventilation: see generator carbon monoxide and power outage.
What goes in the emergency suitcase?
IGSU also asks for an evacuation bag, the rucsac pentru situații de urgență (emergency suitcase or backpack), with documents, money, a radio, food, water for 3 days, light, warm clothes, bedding and hygiene items 1. The full list is on the kit checklist.
