Short answer. Taiwan's National Public Safety Guide asks each household to keep at least 7 days of home supplies, including at least 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, and each person to have a go-bag for at least 1 to 3 days 12. Supplies should be dated and checked every six months, and they do not need to be bought all at once 1.

How many days of supplies does Taiwan recommend?

The guide, published by the Ministry of National Defense's All-out Defense Mobilization Agency, works at two levels 12:

Level Duration Who
Home supplies (日常居家儲備) at least 7 days per household 1
Go-bag (緊急避難包) at least 1 to 3 days per person 2

In the guide's words: "以家庭為單位,準備至少 7 天份" — prepare at least 7 days' worth, per household 1.

How much water should I store?

At least 3 litres of drinking water per person per day, for at least 7 days, at home 1. The go-bag carries 2 bottles of 600 ml per person 2. The guide also lists a simple water-purification device, both at home and in the go-bag 12. For methods, see /guides/water-purification and /guides/water-per-person.

What food does the guide list?

The home list is built around food that needs no cooking or very little 1:

  • No-cook staples: canned food, instant rice, rice crackers, ration biscuits.
  • Energy snacks: nutrition bars, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, sweets.
  • Simple-cook staples: ready meals, rice, instant noodles, dried noodles.
  • Basic seasonings: oil, salt, sugar.

A portable butane stove with gas canisters is on the same list 1. On rotation, see /guides/food-shelf-life; on cooking safely indoors, see /guides/generator-carbon-monoxide.

What else goes in the home supplies?

Hygiene items (masks, toilet paper, disinfectant wipes and alcohol spray, menstrual products if needed), a first-aid kit with usual and prescription medicines and spare glasses or contact lenses, lighting with batteries, a portable radio, power (dry batteries, charging cables, a charged power bank, a small hand-crank generator), work gloves, plastic bags, cling film and cloth tape 1. Care items are added as needed: infant formula, bottles and diapers; pet food and a leash; food for older people, denture cleaner and hearing-aid batteries 1. The full list is on the kit page.

How heavy should the go-bag be?

The guide suggests about 15 kg for men and 10 kg for women, adjusted to what each person can carry, and keeping the bag near the front door 2. It holds water, food for 1 to 3 days, hygiene and first-aid items, a flashlight, whistle, radio, paper evacuation map and contact sheet, rain and cold protection, copies of documents in a waterproof bag, and a small amount of cash 2. See also /guides/72-hour-kit and /guides/important-documents.

How often should supplies be checked?

Every six months, with dates marked on the items 1. The guide adds that supplies can be built up gradually rather than bought in one go 1.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 litres of water per person per day enough?

It is the minimum the Taiwanese guide sets for drinking water in home supplies, for at least 7 days 1.

Do I need both home supplies and a go-bag?

Yes. The guide treats them separately: 7 days at home per household 1 and a 1 to 3 day go-bag per person for leaving quickly 2.

Where should the go-bag be kept?

Near the front door, so it can be taken at once 2.

Should pets be included?

Yes: pet food and a leash are on the home supply list 1. See /guides/pets.
