How much emergency supply should you keep in Luxembourg?

Luxembourg's HCPN advises a home emergency kit for living on your own for "a few days", with at least 6 litres of water per person.

Updated 2026-10-20· 1 official sources

Short answer. Luxembourg's High Commission for National Protection (HCPN) advises households to keep an emergency kit for living on their own for "a few days", at home if confined or away if evacuated 1. No fixed number of days is given. The only quantity the official list states is at least 6 litres of water per person, preferably in small bottles 1.

Information verified on 20 October 2026.

How many days of supplies does Luxembourg recommend?

The HCPN does not set a number of days. Its checklist, "Kit en situation d'urgence", says: "Il est conseillé de constituer à la maison un « kit d'urgence » permettant de vivre de manière autonome quelques jours chez soi, en cas de confinement ; en dehors, en cas d'évacuation" (It is advisable to put together an "emergency kit" at home so you can live independently for a few days at home if confined, or elsewhere if evacuated) 1.

Phaenyx does not convert "a few days" into a number. If you want a benchmark from other agencies, our guides What goes in a 72-hour emergency kit? and Two weeks of emergency supplies compare official recommendations, each with its own source.

How much water per person?

At least 6 litres per person, preferably in small bottles 1. The list does not say over how many days this amount should last. For the daily figures used by other agencies, see How much water per person per day? and Which containers are safe for storing water?.

What else belongs in the supply?

The official list combines food, tools, light, information and documents 1:

Category What the HCPN lists 1
Water and food At least 6 L of water per person; non-perishable, easy-to-eat food
Cooking and tools A stove, preferably gas; multi-function pocket knife, can opener, scissors
Light Torch with two sets of spare batteries, or a wind-up torch; candles with matches or a lighter, used responsibly
Information Battery or wind-up radio (a car radio can be an alternative in some cases)
Health First-aid kit including prescribed medicines: dressings, compresses, disinfectant, paracetamol
Papers and money Copies of identity, insurance and other important documents in waterproof packaging; cash; spare house and car keys; a list of useful phone numbers
Comfort Hygiene products; one change of clothes and shoes per person (more for children); sleeping bags or blankets; board games

At the last moment, add current medicines and prescriptions, your phone and laptop with chargers, and your wallet 1. The full list, line by line, is on Luxembourg's emergency kit checklist.

The HCPN labels its list "Liste non exhaustive" and presents it as a suggestion to adapt to your household and health 1.

What else should a household know?

The HCPN also asks households to know where and how to shut off water, gas and electricity, how to stay in touch with family, and which elderly or vulnerable neighbours may need help 1. Check the kit regularly for completeness and expiry dates 1.
