Short answer. Italy's Civil Protection Department gives no official stockpile duration and no quantities. Its "Io non rischio" campaign asks households to keep water and food in stock at home ("tieni in casa scorte di acqua e cibo") 2 and to prepare an emergency kit containing, for example, copies of documents, a first-aid kit, a torch and a battery radio 1. Information verified on 2026-10-20.
What does Italy officially recommend keeping at home?
Two things. First, a stock of water and food at home 2. Second, an emergency kit. The Department's earthquake page says: "prepara un kit di emergenza che contenga, ad esempio, copia dei documenti, cassetta di pronto soccorso, torcia elettrica, radio a pile, ecc." ("prepare an emergency kit containing, for example, copies of documents, a first-aid kit, an electric torch, a battery radio, etc.") 1.
The words "ad esempio" and "ecc." matter: the list is a set of examples, not a closed checklist 1. The item-by-item version is on our official kit list page.
How many days of supplies does Italy recommend?
None is stated. No number of days, litres of water per person or food quantities is published at national level 12. This sets Italy apart from countries that publish a target duration. If you want a figure to plan around, other agencies' recommendations are summarised in How much water to store per person per day? and What goes in a 72-hour emergency kit?. Those figures are not Italian official guidance.
What extra items apply near Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei?
The multi-risk booklet adds advice for the Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei areas 2:
| Situation | Official advice |
|---|---|
| Red zone, evacuation ordered | Go home and pack a suitcase with essentials such as documents and medicines ("vai a casa e prepara la valigia. Ricorda di prendere le cose essenziali (documenti, medicine, ecc.)") 2 |
| Yellow zone, ash fall | Protective masks and dust goggles against volcanic ash 2 |
The booklet gives no quantity for masks or goggles 2. Check your Comune's civil protection plan to know whether you live in a red or yellow zone.
How should I build a stock without official quantities?
Start from what Italy does say. Keep water and food you already eat, and rotate it; see How long does emergency food last, and how do you rotate it?. Put copies of your documents in the kit, as the official list asks 1; Which documents and how much cash to keep for an emergency? explains what to copy. Keep a first-aid kit (What should be in a home first-aid kit?) and a battery radio, which matters if mobile networks fail (Which radio and alerts do you need when networks are down?).
Add what your household needs: daily medicines, items for babies, older or disabled people (Emergency preparedness for children, seniors and people on medication) and pets (How do I prepare my pet for an emergency?). These additions are general advice, not part of the Italian list.
Where is Italy's official preparedness guide?
The reference document is the "Io non rischio - Sfogliabile multirischio" booklet, © 2025 Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, published as a PDF 2. It covers earthquake, tsunami, flood, wildfire, volcanoes and IT-alert, and it is in Italian 2.
