Does Ireland distribute iodine tablets?

Ireland distributes no iodine tablets: the EPA says they would not be necessary for a UK nuclear emergency. One 65 mg product is authorised, not marketed.

Updated 2026-10-20· 3 official sources

Short answer. Ireland does not distribute iodine tablets to households and has no iodine distribution zones. The EPA and the 2026 National Plan state that iodine tablets would not be necessary for a nuclear emergency at a working UK facility, as Ireland is more than 200 km away 12. One potassium iodide 65 mg product is authorised by the HPRA as pharmacy-only, without prescription, but is listed as "not marketed" 3.

Why are iodine tablets not distributed in Ireland?

The official reasoning is distance. The EPA states: "Ireland is more than 200 km from the nearest nuclear power plants, on the west coast of the UK" 1. For an emergency at a working UK nuclear facility, it adds that "The emergency would not result in immediate observable health effects and protective actions, such as sheltering, evacuation or the consumption of iodine tablets, would not be necessary" 1. Ireland's National Plan for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Exposures, updated in July 2026, takes the same position 2.

As a result, there are no pre-distribution zones and households are not supplied 12.

Who is in charge of radiation emergencies?

The Environmental Protection Agency is the primary competent authority under the National Plan for Nuclear and Radiological Emergency Exposures, published by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment 2.

Can I buy potassium iodide in Ireland?

The Health Products Regulatory Authority lists one authorised product: Potassium iodide G.L. Pharma 65 mg tablets, authorisation PA1770/001/001 3. Its register entry reads:

Field HPRA entry
Prescription "Product not subject to medical prescription" 3
Supply "Supply through pharmacies only" 3
Marketing "Not marketed" 3

In other words, the product is authorised for pharmacy sale without prescription, but the register lists it as not on the market 3. Ask a pharmacist before relying on availability.

Should I take iodine on my own?

Irish official guidance does not advise it for the scenario it covers 12. Our guide on potassium iodide explains how it works and what international agencies say about doses; follow Irish authorities' instructions on the day.
