Short answer. Ireland publishes no official public shelter network, no shelter count and no shelter locator. The 2026 Be Emergency Ready booklet covers leaving home but names no shelters 1. For an emergency at a working UK nuclear facility, the EPA states that protective actions such as sheltering would not be necessary in Ireland 2.
Does Ireland have public bunkers or civil defence shelters?
No public shelter network is published by Irish authorities. There is no official count of shelter places and no map or search tool to find one 12. This page will be updated if that changes.
Why does Irish guidance not mention shelters?
The official documents do not give a reason. What they do say concerns the main radiological scenario: the EPA notes that "Ireland is more than 200 km from the nearest nuclear power plants, on the west coast of the UK" 2, and that for such an emergency "The emergency would not result in immediate observable health effects and protective actions, such as sheltering, evacuation or the consumption of iodine tablets, would not be necessary" 2.
What does the official guidance cover instead?
The Be Emergency Ready guidance focuses on household supplies for an emergency in which power or water may be lost, and covers leaving home 13. For leaving home, the checklist lists medication and hygiene items, warm and waterproof clothing, a mobile phone and charger, ID and key documents, cash and debit or credit cards 3.
Useful next steps:
- the emergency supplies page for what to keep at home;
- the alerts page for how instructions are broadcast;
- the iodine page for the nuclear scenario;
- our guide shelter or evacuate? for how the two options are compared in general.
Can I shelter at home instead?
Irish official sources do not publish advice on choosing a shelter room at home. General principles, such as how much protection walls and distance provide, are explained in our guides on protection factor and the 7-10 rule for fallout. Those guides cite non-Irish agencies; follow Irish authorities' instructions on the day.
Frequently asked questions

Do I need a shelter for a UK nuclear accident?
For an emergency at a working UK nuclear facility, the EPA states that sheltering would not be necessary in Ireland 2.
