Short answer. Georgia has no nuclear power plant, and no current official iodine-tablet distribution, stockpile, zone or sale status could be confirmed. The only official text found is a 2004 Health Ministry instruction on large-scale radiation accidents, which says pharmacies and medical facilities should stock potassium iodide and families keep some at home 1. Whether it is still applied is not confirmed. Follow the Georgian authorities' instructions.
What does the 2004 instruction say?
Order No. 8/ნ of 14 January 2004, issued by the then Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs, contains methodological instructions for organising health measures during large-scale radiation accidents 1. According to its annex 1:
- medical "sentinel" services should stock potassium iodide for their population for at least 7 days;
- the public is to be supplied through the pharmacy network;
- part of the stock should be kept in households and renewed every 3 to 4 years.
No evidence was found that this has been carried out, and whether the instruction is still applied could not be confirmed 1.
Why does this page not give a dose?
The 2004 text does print doses, but it also lists 5% iodine tincture and Lugol's solution taken by mouth as substitutes for tablets 1. That is outdated and not in line with World Health Organization guidance, so Phaenyx does not repeat any of the text's dosage as advice. Never take iodine tincture or antiseptic iodine by mouth. If iodine prophylaxis is ever needed, follow the instructions of the Georgian authorities and of a health professional. Our potassium iodide guide explains what the tablets do and do not do.
What could not be confirmed?
| Question | Status |
|---|---|
| Is iodine pre-distributed to households? | Not confirmed 1 |
| Are there iodine distribution zones? | None defined in any text found 1 |
| Is potassium iodide sold over the counter or on prescription? | Not confirmed: the medicines registries could not be reached (see below) |
| Is the 2004 stockpiling scheme in place? | No evidence found 1 |
The website of the medicines regulator (rama.moh.gov.ge) opens in a browser, but the two registries it links to, the pharmaceutical product register (pharmacy.moh.gov.ge) and the medicine search (apps.ssa.gov.ge), could not be reached from outside Georgia on 21 October 2026, and the web archive was offline. No public text from the Agency of Nuclear and Radiation Safety or the Emergency Management Service on iodine tablets was found. This page will be updated once these points are checked.
