Should you take iodine tablets in Estonia?

Take iodine tablets in Estonia only on official instruction. Two 65 mg potassium iodide tablets are registered as over-the-counter medicines.

Updated 2026-10-21· 5 official sources

Short answer. Estonian authorities say: "Do not take iodine tablets unless officially instructed." 1 The Environmental Board (Keskkonnaamet) explains that tablets are only needed close to a nuclear accident, taken a few hours before exposure to a radioactive iodine cloud 2. Two 65 mg potassium iodide tablets are registered in Estonia as over-the-counter medicines 45. No official pre-distribution or zone plan exists in the sources found.

When would iodine tablets be needed in Estonia?

Only near a nuclear accident. The Environmental Board says iodine prophylaxis may be needed up to a few dozen kilometres from the accident site, depending on the accident and the weather, and that the need decreases out to about 100 km 2. Tablets work best when taken a few hours before exposure to a radioactive iodine cloud, and their effect lasts about 24 to 36 hours 2.

The Board published this advice on 1 March 2022 to explain that it was not necessary to take iodine tablets in Estonia because of the events in Ukraine: Estonia is more than 1,000 km from the operating Ukrainian nuclear plants 2.

The general guide /guides/potassium-iodide explains how the tablets work and their limits.

Who decides when to take them?

The authorities. The Rescue Board's page on chemical and radiation accidents is explicit: do not take iodine tablets unless officially instructed 1. The Environmental Board also says to take them only when the authorities have ordered it 2.

Does Estonia distribute iodine tablets in advance?

No official pre-distribution of iodine tablets to households appears in the sources found 12.

Are there iodine zones around nuclear plants in Estonia?

None are published. Estonia has no nuclear power plant. The Environmental Board's distance guidance (a few dozen kilometres, decreasing out to about 100 km) applies to an accident wherever it happens 2. For how zones work in countries that have plants, see /guides/nuclear-plant-zones.

Can I buy potassium iodide in an Estonian pharmacy?

Yes, without a prescription. The State Agency of Medicines register lists two 65 mg potassium iodide tablets (ATC code V03AB21) 4:

Product Strength Prescription category
Kaaliumjodiid SERB 65 mg tablet K (over the counter) 4
Potassium Iodide G.L. Pharma 65 mg tablet K (over the counter) 4

In the register, "K" stands for käsimüügiravim, an over-the-counter medicine, as opposed to retseptiravim, a prescription medicine 5. Buying tablets does not mean you should take them: follow official instructions first 1.

What should I do in a radiation accident?

Follow the Rescue Board's instructions for chemical and radiation accidents, which come before any decision on iodine 1. Shelter indoors as for any alert: the siren means seek shelter immediately, away from windows 3. The guides /guides/fallout-7-10-rule and /guides/radiation-decontamination give general background.
