Updated 2026-10-20· 3 official sources

Short answer. INDECI, Peru's national civil defence institute, publishes a tick-box list called the "Survival Combo": an emergency backpack for the first 24 hours (one per two people, about 8 kg, taken when evacuating) and a reserve box for days 2 to 4, kept at home 2. Together they cover the first four days of an emergency 12. The list below follows INDECI's 2019 triptych.

What goes in the emergency backpack (first 24 hours)?

Item Quantity
Still bottled water 1/2 litre bottle (triptych) 2; the 2021 workbook example lists 1 litre per person 3
Non-perishable food: cereal bar, canned food, chocolate For the first 24 hours 2
Hygiene: antibacterial gel, toilet paper, hand and face towel, pack of wet wipes 1 each 2
First-aid kit: first-aid manual, ethyl alcohol, sterile gauze, adhesive tape, adhesive bandages, elastic bandages, antibiotics/anti-inflammatories, antibiotic cream 1 kit 2
Warmth: fleece blanket, footwear 1 each 2
Cash, preferably coins Some 2
Communication: torch and batteries, portable radio, spare batteries, whistle, notebook with emergency numbers, writing materials 1 each 2
Miscellaneous: strong plastic bags, multipurpose knife, work gloves, polyester rope, lighter, plastic sheet for floor or roof, multipurpose tape, floor mat, face masks 1 each 2
Others: spare keys, spare glasses, photocopies of ID (DNI), driving licence and passport, photocopies of insurance cards and property deeds 1 set 2

What goes in the reserve box (days 2 to 4)?

Item Quantity
Still bottled water 2.5 L bottle 2
Non-perishable food: instant soup, canned food, powdered or canned milk, cereal bars, sweets, chocolate For days 2 to 4; amount depends on the family 2
Hygiene: hand and bath towels, toothbrush and toothpaste, soap As needed 2
Clothing: jacket or sweater, underwear, socks, fleece blanket As needed 2

The reserve box is not carried during evacuation. Keep it in a dry, protected place, for example the car or the garden 2.

What else does INDECI say about the list?

Adapt the contents to your family and your geographic area, and renew items according to their expiry dates. A new backpack is not needed: any bag in good condition will do 2. Related guides: first-aid kit, important documents, emergency radio.
