Short answer. The Czech Republic has one public warning signal, Všeobecná výstraha (General alert): a fluctuating siren tone for 140 seconds, which may be repeated three times about three minutes apart 1. When you hear it, take shelter, close windows and doors, switch off ventilation and turn on ČT1, ČT24 or ČRo 1 Radiožurnál 1. A continuous 140-second tone at noon on the first Wednesday of the month is a test 1.
What are the Czech siren signals?
| Signal | Sound | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Všeobecná výstraha (General alert) | Fluctuating tone for 140 seconds, possibly repeated 3 times about 3 minutes apart | The only public warning signal: take shelter and follow radio or TV 1 |
| Zkouška sirén (Siren test) | Continuous tone for 140 seconds, usually at 12:00 on the first Wednesday of the month | Test only, no action needed 1 |
| Požární poplach (Fire alarm) | Interrupted tone for 1 minute (25 s on, 10 s off, 25 s on) | Calls out fire units, no public action needed 1 |
The fire and rescue service describes it this way: "Varovný signál VŠEOBECNÁ VÝSTRAHA je vyhlašován kolísavým tónem po dobu 140 sekund a může zaznít třikrát po sobě v cca tříminutových intervalech" 1.
After the signal, electronic sirens broadcast a spoken message explaining the threat 1.
What should I do when I hear the General alert?
- Shelter in a nearby solid building. If you are driving, stop and seek shelter 1.
- Choose the right room. Central windowless rooms on upper floors are preferred; avoid cellars, because some chemicals are heavier than air 1.
- Seal the room. Close windows and doors and switch off ventilation 1.
- Find out what is happening through radio, TV (ČT1, ČT24, ČRo 1 Radiožurnál) or the local information system 1.
- Do not call the emergency lines unnecessarily 1.
Exception: floods. If a flood is imminent, do not shelter in the building: go to higher ground instead 1.
For radiation, a closed masonry room such as a cellar is preferred; see public shelters and our guide shelter or evacuate?.
How many sirens are there, and will they work in a power cut?
More than 8,800 sirens are run by the fire and rescue service, most of them remotely controlled, and the system covers more than 85% of permanently inhabited areas 1. Electronic ("talking") sirens have backup power and broadcast a voice message; rotary sirens do not work in a power cut 1. A battery-powered radio is on the official kit list: see Czech kit checklist and emergency radio.
Will I get an alert on my phone?
Not yet confirmed. The government approved a Cell Broadcast system on 21 May 2025 2. On 4 December 2025 the Interior Ministry said mobile operators would now develop and test it, with launch planned for the second half of 2026 3: "Operátoři teď začnou příslušný systém vyvíjet a testovat, jeho spuštění je plánováno na druhou polovinu příštího roku" 3. An implementing decree was still to go through the government Legislative Council 3. No service launch had been confirmed on the official sources we consulted as of October 2026. Until it is, rely on sirens, radio and TV.
Who must broadcast emergency information?
Act 239/2000 Sb. on the Integrated Rescue System and the Crisis Act oblige broadcasters to air emergency information 1.
