How do rocket and missile alerts work in Israel?

Israeli alerts target each locality via sirens, the Home Front Command app and the National Emergency Portal. Siren length = time to reach shelter.

Updated 2026-10-20· 6 official sources

Short answer. Home Front Command alerts in Israel are targeted to each locality, and large cities are split into several alert zones 1. They arrive by outdoor sirens, the official Home Front Command app, the National Emergency Portal on a home computer, and TV, radio and websites 1. The length of the siren is the time you have to reach your protected space; you then stay inside for 10 minutes 1.

What does the siren mean?

A siren or alert means a missile or rocket threat to your alert zone. You must enter your protected space within the protection time available for your area 1. The Home Front Command flyer puts it in one sentence: "The length of time the siren sounds is the time you have to enter the protected space" 1.

Signal What to do
Siren / alert Enter the protected space within your area's protection time; the siren's duration is that time 1
After the alert Stay in the protected space for 10 minutes, no less 1; after 10 minutes you may leave if no other instruction has been given 3

How do I know my alert zone and protection time?

The name of your locality is your alert zone; large cities are divided into several zones 1. To learn your zone and the time you have, enter your locality and street in the Home Front Command app or on the National Emergency Portal 1. Knowing this time in advance is what lets you choose a realistic protected space: see public shelters.

Through which channels are alerts sent?

Channel How it works
Personal siren: Home Front Command app (יישומון פיקוד העורף) Location-based personal alerts, plus alert zones of your choice 1
Home siren: National Emergency Portal (פורטל החירום הלאומי) Open the portal, select your locality and leave the computer on 1
Public sirens Mainly for people outdoors 1
Media TV channels, radio stations and websites 1
Text messages to mobile phones Listed by the State Comptroller among the alert channels 2

The flyer describes public sirens as mainly for people outdoors, and calls the app a "personal siren" and the portal a "home siren" 1.

Does Israel use cell broadcast?

Yes. The Home Front Command's "Personal Message" service (מסר אישי) sends immediate alerts and short instructions to mobile phones by Cell Broadcast, only to the antennas covering the areas the Home Front Command system has identified 5. Under the Ministry of Communications service file, mobile operators provide it free of charge and by default: there is nothing to sign up for, as long as your handset supports Cell Broadcast 5. Your operator explains how to enable the feature on the handset if needed 5. Messages are broadcast in four languages, with channels for Hebrew, English, Russian and Arabic 5. On 24 March 2026 the IDF reported several times that the Home Front Command "has sent a precautionary directive directly to mobile phones in the relevant areas" after missile launches from Iran 6.

Detail What the official sources say
Name "Personal Message" (מסר אישי), run from the Home Front Command's central system 5
Technology Cell Broadcast on the mobile networks, targeted at antenna sector level 5
Sign-up None; provided by default and free of charge on supporting handsets 5
Languages Hebrew, English, Russian and Arabic channels 5

A 2014 press report described an earlier limited launch for Ashdod 4. Keep the Home Front Command app and the other channels above as well: a phone that does not support Cell Broadcast will not receive these messages 5.

What should I do when the siren sounds?

The Home Front Command gives instructions for each situation 13:

  • Indoors: enter the protected space and close the door and windows.
  • Outdoors: enter a nearby building; otherwise lie on the ground and protect your head.
  • In a car: stop safely and enter a building; otherwise move away from the car and lie down.
  • On a city bus: get off and enter a building.
  • On an intercity bus or train: crouch below window level and protect your head.

Frequently asked questions

How long must I stay in the protected space?

At least 10 minutes 1. After 10 minutes you may leave if no other instruction has been given 3.

Will I hear the outdoor siren inside my home?

The flyer describes public sirens as mainly intended for people outdoors 1. It also lists a "home siren": the National Emergency Portal, left open on a computer with your locality selected, and a "personal siren" in the Home Front Command app 1.

Can the app warn me about another town?

Yes. Besides location-based alerts, the app lets you add alert zones of your choice 1, for example where relatives live.

Is there a family plan for alerts?

The flyer includes life-saving instructions during rocket fire and a family plan 1. Our guide on the family emergency plan explains how to prepare one.
